Domtar Employees Partner with Harvest Texarkana to Provide Weekend Snack Packs for Children in Ashdo

Franks Elementary Principal ; Yvonne Bond, Margaret Daniel Primary Counselor ; Loretta Price, CDF Counselor; Camille Coker, Executive Director of Harvest Texarkana ; Bob Grygotis, General Manager of Domtar-Ashdown Mill ; Anna McFarland, Domtar Pulp Mill Maintenance Planner ; and Kim Horn, Domtar Safety Administrator.

It started with an “Adopt a BackPack” campaign in the clock alley of Domtar-Ashdown Mill and just grew from there. In less than eight weeks, generous Domtar employees had donated a total of $5200, enough to fill weekend backpacks with food for 52 Ashdown youngsters in grades K-3 for the entire 2015-16 school year.

The idea originated with Anna McFarland, Domtar pulp maintenance planner who is a member of SWAT (Safety, Wellness, Action Team) of Domtar, as part of the new initiative of the team to perform community projects quarterly. After coordinating with Camille Wrinkle, Executive Director of Harvest Texarkana, McFarland and her teammates set up an “Adopt a BackPack” center in the employee clock alley of the mill, where a $100 donation funded a Weekend Snack Pack for a child, and broadened the challenge by conducting a “bucket drive” for additional donations.

Elementary School Gym Named After Beloved Teacher

Over 4500 elementary students remember Mrs. Evelyn Bell as an energetic, dedicated and inspiring physical education teacher during her almost 40 years with the Ashdown School District, so it is quite appropriate that the elementary gymnasium located on the C. D. Franks Elementary/Margaret Daniel Primary Schools’ campus be officially given the name “Evelyn Bell Gym.” The official naming ceremony, a surprise for Mrs. Bell, took place on May 29 as the kick-off event for the schools’ annual Field Day for students, which can also be attributed to Bell’s efforts while a P.E. teacher for the district.

Keep Saving Boxtops 4 Education Through Summer

The kiddos may be taking their summer vacation, but the Box Tops for Education program continues!  Four campuses in the Ashdown School District collect Box Tops to assist in purchasing campus playground and classroom needs not otherwise covered by the school budget.
Worth 10 cents each, clipped box tops add up quickly and result in a nice-sized check mailed to the participating campuses at least twice a year.  Since beginning its collection program in 2010, Margaret Daniel Primary School has received almost $8000 in return for coupons on selected store item boxes that would otherwise have just been thrown in the trash.
