AHS Teacher to Attend UT Journalism Summer Program

Ashdown High School journalism teacher Nancy Gibson has been accepted for the School of Journalism at The University of Texas’ Eleventh Annual UT ASNE (American Society of News Editors) Summer Institute for high school teachers.  The two-week institute will be held on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin from June 16-28.

MDP Celebrates Autism Awareness

Margaret Daniel Primary School celebrated Autism Awareness throughout the month of April. Employees sported their “I Love Someone with Autism ” T-shirts, and students school wide participated in a puzzle piece coloring contest with prizes awarded to the most creative in each classroom/staff division. The contest was judged by Dennis and Tara Currence. In addition, Brandi Wilson volunteered her time to speak to all the pre-K, K, and 1st grade students about autism in their classrooms.

Students learned more about autism, which is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the world, with one in every 50 school children having some form of autism.  The motto for autism awareness is “Different, not less.”  To learn more about autism, watch the YouTube video “Puzzle Piece Friends Autism Awareness Video 2013.”

Ashdown Campuses Appreciate Volunteers

Margaret Daniel Primary School invited more than one hundred community volunteers to an appreciation tea in their honor.  MDP Principal Kay York thanked the attendees for all of the contributions and selfless acts they perform for the youngsters and the staff throughout the year.  The MDP volunteers serve as Groovy Grannies, Watch D.O.G.S., Family Night volunteers, homeroom helpers, reading buddies, Good Morning Greeters, yard groomers, flower gardeners, and numerous other helpful positions.

Five Ashdown High School senior members of the Ashdown Purple Pride Band signed letters of intent to participate in college band programs next year.  AHS Band Director Mark Pounds announced the scholarship awards at the annual Spring Concert on May 2, and the seniors signed the letters during the reception immediately afterward.

IMMUNIZATION CHANGES EFFECTIVE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR

 

Changes in the required immunizations for public school students will take effect for the 2014-15 school year, according to Katherine Guidry, school nurse for the Ashdown School District.  Parents of school age children should pay special attention to the following required changes:

1 dose Tdap required on ALL 8 through 12 grades

2 doses of Varicella grades 1 through 12 (no longer able to accept history of disease)

1 dose meningococcal required for 7th grade and second dose at age 16 years.  If no dose by age 16 years, then 1 dose needed only

Hep A required on all Kindergarten, 2 doses in series but needs to be started before entry

Ashdown School District Participates in School Choice

 

In compliance with Public School Choice Act 1227 of 2013 (effective April 16, 2013), Ashdown School District (LEA #4101000) will participate in school choice for the 2013-14 school year.  Act 1227 sets June 1, 2013, as the date by which students or parents must apply for school choice in order for the application to be approved by the Department of Education.

McElroy Signs with OBU

Ashdown High School Panther softball player Brittany McElroy has signed a letter of intent to play softball for the Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers.  McElroy, the daughter of Rusty and Sandy McElroy, will receive a softball athletic scholarship, as well as an academic scholarship, to attend the university, where she plans to major in Education.
