Teachers of the Year announced.

Every year all Ashdown School campuses honor an outstanding educator as

their Teacher of the Year. The honorees are treated to breakfast with the

Superintendent, Mike Walker, and the District Administrators. The

breakfast is held each year at the Hunter-Coulter House and each selected

teacher receives an award and praise from their campus principal. The six

teachers honored this year are Teresa Daugherty, Chris Flynt, Korillene

Harris, Kelli Webb, Paula Ward and Joseph Baker.

Ashdown School of the 21st Century Preschool Program noted in a state

periodical. In a recently received edition of The Parent Educator, a

newsletter for parent educators throughout the state of Arkansas, a front

page article discussed the importance of collaborating with parents and the

community to assure that no child is left behind. Marti Genge, editor of the

publication, gave an example of a school with “great collaboration”. The

article featured the collaborative work of Ashdown’s School of the 21st

Century Preschool Program facilitated by Patricia Walker.

 

Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) Lab students from

Ashdown and all over Arkansas attended Research Day at the state capitol.

Trisha Tart and Elizabeth Davis (Linda Davis-CD) took part with other

Arkansas students to present the Rural Broadband Project to state legislators.

 

Congratulations to the Panther football team members selected in the

Texarkana Gazette for area football honors.

Three AHS students have been selected as Delta Sigma Theta Outstanding

Young Men. They are Chris Bell, Levert Ricks, and Landon Williams.

Congratulations to all of these students on these accomplishments.

 

Ashdown students at CD Franks strolled

their way through a lesson on good health

last Friday when the Cooperative Extension

Service provided the Body Walk Exhibit.

Students toured a walk-through body to

learn the importance of good nutrition and

exercise. High school students staffed each

station and taught the children how to make

healthy choices. Classroom teachers

prepared the children for the Body Walk

experience by giving them prior classroom

instruction.

Welcome to new employees Patty Cromer, Paraprofessional at High

School and Ronnie Clay in Transportation.

Megan Deaton, Katie Dixon, Elizabeth Davis (Linda Davis-CD), Marli Mullins

(LaQuita-AJHS and Michael Mullins-Maintenance), Chase Jones, Blake Wickless,

Sarah Withem ( Lesa Withem-AJHS) and Landon Carver were selected to play during

the Four States Bandmaster’s Convention. On the closing night of the convention the

students performed at the Perot with the band composed of outstanding band students

from the Four States Area.

 

This year, we will begin a new competition which will fund a

community scholarship for a senior entering college. The 1st Annual Alisha

Proksch Miss Photogenic Competition will help finance this scholarship. The

competition is open to any girl registered in the Ashdown School District in

grades 9-12 and the girl does not have to be a contestant in the Miss AHS

Pageant. The winner will be featured in the Panther Eyes Yearbook and

recognized during the Miss AHS pageant. You can pick up your entry form from

Mrs. Sheppard’s room. Entries must be turned in to Mrs. Sheppard by February

7th. Entry fee for this part of the competition is $10.00

Scholastic Book Fair is planned for Margaret Daniel Primary Monday Feb. 5th.

Delta Kappa Gamma’s first meeting of 2007 will be Tuesday,

February 13, at 6:30 p.m. at CCCUA. President, Carolyn

Castleman stated, “Please mark this date and time in your calendar

of activities. We have planned a special time of "pampering" for

you with an out-of-town speaker and it's going to be fun.”

 

Don’t forget the Birthday Celebration of the Little River

County Courthouse. If you are involving your students in a

learning activity for the celebration, complete it early so as not to

conflict with testing in April

.

The AHS cheerleaders are selling sweatshirts. If you would like to order one see a

cheerleader or Ms. Dickson for an order form.

The AHS Band will be having a Bake Sale

this Saturday at the Ashdown Wal-Mart.

Donations will be accepted for the Valentine

Basket to be given away at a drawing. Who

will be the winner? It could be you.

 

Learn practical, easy to use techniques to create a positive home

atmosphere where everyone wins. Sign up now for the Love and

Logic workshop on Feb. 5 at 4:00 p.m. The workshop is free for

Ashdown School parents and community. Nancy Coker is the

facilitator. The sessions will be held at the Parent Center at 460

NW Front Street. Refreshments provided.

ASHDOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT

BOARD OF EDUCATION

January 22, 2007

The Board of Education of the Ashdown Public Schools held its regular monthly meeting

on Monday January 22, 2007 at the L. F. Henderson School. Board President Raymond

Latson called the meeting to order at 6:12 p.m. Ricky Ward called the roll. Raymond

Latson, Dorothy Henderson, Rosa Bowman, Imogene Mize, Ricky Ward, Chuck Davis

were present. Milton Higginbotham was absent. The meeting began with prayer by

Imogene Mize. L. F. Henderson Student Council Officers Hunter Pennington (Joni

Pennington-LF, Dixie Pennington-HS), Trent Fricks (Sharla and Keith Fricks-LF), Jay

Surber (Susan Surber-MD), and C. J. Gooden led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Report to Board

Mr. Walker:

􀂄 presented a review of expenditures. Dorothy Henderson made a motion to approve.

Chuck Davis seconded. Motion carried.

􀂄 presented the financial report.

􀂄 reported that the current enrollment is 1619.

􀂄 gave a report on District Services Department.

School Board members were given a tote bag and a cup with the district’s logo on them. Susan

Simmons and Judy Dowdy coordinated this district wide effort for Board Appreciation month.

Old Business

Mr. Walker made a recommendation to approve the December 18, 2006 regular meeting minutes.

Dorothy Henderson made a motion to accept the recommendation. Imogene Mize seconded.

Motion carried.

Building Construction

􀂄 Mr. Walker reported that the new field house was completed except for a few minor

details. The flooring and painting are completed and they are in the process of moving

into the building.

􀂄 Mr. Walker made a recommendation to approve a change order for Tri-State Track, Inc.

for $28,500.00 to change the color of the top coat on the new track field from black to red

to insure that the thickness of the top coat is appropriate. This change will still keep the

bid amount well under the next lowest bidder. Dorothy Henderson made a motion to

accept the recommendation. Chuck Davis seconded. Motion carried.

􀂄 Mr. Walker reported that a committee has been formed to determine the furniture needs

for the new building they have visited other schools to help them in their assessment.

There are also a few leaks that are being addressed and will be corrected when the gable

ends are installed.

New Business

1. Mr. Walker reviewed the school calendar.

2. NSBA Final plans are being made for those board members who will be

attending the 67th NSBA Annual Conference in San Francisco, CA; April 14-17,

2007.

3. Mr. Walker made a recommendation to accept the State’s recommendation for

Reimbursable Food Service Rates for Agencies who use our food services for

2007-2008 school year at $2.42 for Breakfast, $1.56 for Lunch and $.65 for

Snacks. Imogene Mize made a motion to accept the recommendation. Chuck

Davis seconded. Motion carried.

4. Mr. Walker reported that the Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be February 1,

2007. Five board members are planning to attend.

5. Mr. Walker made a recommendation to purchase a 2006 Uplander program van

from Morrick Chervorlet for $14,850.00. Ricky Ward made a motion to accept

the recommendation. Imogene Mize seconded. Motion carried.

6. Mr. Walker made a recommendation to change the February board meeting from

February 19, 2007 to February 12, 2007. Dorothy Henderson made a motion to

accept the recommendation. Imogene Mize seconded. Motion carried.

7. Mr. Walker made a recommendation to accept the low bid to purchase 100 new

lockers from All Storage for $19,180.00 for the new High School Building.

Dorothy Henderson made a motion to accept the recommendation. Ricky Ward

seconded. Motion carried.

8. Mr. Walker made a recommendation to accept the new master facilities plan due

to Arkansas Department of Education on February 1, 2007 as presented. Chuck

Davis made a motion to accept the recommendation. Ricky Ward seconded.

Motion carried.

9. Mr. Walker made a recommendation to change page 13 of the High School

Handbook to read, “Any student taking any course who has been identified as

being an “at-risk student” in need of intervention in the area of “End of Course”

preparation will be required to satisfactorily participate in an intervention

program in order to receive credit for the corresponding course.” Ricky Ward

made a motion to accept the recommendation. Dorothy Henderson seconded.

Motion carried.

10. Mr. Walker made a recommendation to renew the District Website Maintenance

Agreement with Ronda Pounds for the 2006-2007 school year and change the

amount from $1000.00 to $1,200.00. Imogene Mize made a motion to accept the

recommendation. Chuck Davis seconded. Motion carried.

Dorothy Henderson made a motion at 7:20 p.m. to go into executive session after a five minute

break. Imogene Mize seconded. Motion carried. Raymond Latson called the meeting back to

order at 8:55 p.m. Chuck Davis made a motion to return to open session. Rosa Bowman

seconded. Motion carried.

No action was taken during executive session.

Personnel

􀂄 Mr. Walker made a recommendation to accept Family Medical Leave for Dixie

Pennington from January 8, 2007 thru January 19, 2007. Chuck Davis made a motion to

accept the recommendation. Ricky Ward seconded. Motion carried.

􀂄 Mr. Walker made a recommendation to hire Patti Cromer for the paraprofessional

position at the High School effective January 23, 2007 thru the remainder of the school.

Dorothy Henderson made a motion to accept the recommendation. Imogene Mize

seconded. Motion carried.

􀂄 Mr. Walker made a recommendation to terminate bus driver Cathy Vaughn as of January

10, 2007. Dorothy Henderson made a motion to accept the recommendation. Imogene

Mize seconded. Motion carried.

􀂄 Mr. Walker made a recommendation to hire Ronald Clay as a bus driver effective

January 18, 2007 thru the remainder of the school year. Ricky Ward made a motion to

accept the recommendation. Dorothy Henderson seconded. Motion carried.

􀂄 Dorothy Henderson made a motion to rehire Mike Walker as Superintendent for 2007-

2008 with a 3-year contract, eliminating the $3000.00 travel allowance, changing the

index from 1.8991 to 1.9654 with a yearly review and the option to add one year to the

contract to maintain a 3-year contract. Imogene Mize seconded. Motion carried.

Dorothy Henderson made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 9:04 p.m. Rosa Bowman seconded.
