The Ashdown High School Purple Pride Band marched Saturday, October 20,

2007 in the Ouachita Valley Invitational Marching Contest at Camden, Arkansas.

The band received a 1st division rating, as well as Drum Major, Caitlin Smith,

Colorguard, and Percussion. Gerid Ardwin was named the best soloist in Class

AA Bands, Caitlin Smith received best drum major for Class AA Bands and

Grand Champion Drum Major for the entire competition. The color guard

received best color guard for Class AA Bands. Their next competition will be on

Tuesday, October 30 at Lakeside High School (Hot Springs) for Region III

Magazine features Ashdown Schools

Ashdown School District presents the first edition of the Four States Living

Magazine totally devoted to the district. The magazine was distributed to the

community last week. If you have not seen one, come by the Parent Center at

460 NW Front St. to pickup a copy. Kay York and Susan Simmons headed up

the project and Key Communicators at each campus wrote the articles in

collaboration with the principals and submitted the pictures.

 

New High School Open House

Domtar's Buddy Allen & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Over 300 attended the Ashdown High School Alumni Association Dinner

 on Homecoming night. The dinner brought together former students to reconnect with

fellow classmates and teachers. Plans are being made for next year’s dinner.

Lights On After School will be celebrated on Nov. 6th at Ashdown Junior High. "Panthers

After school With Style" will be the theme. Fun activities will include games and pizza starting at 5:30. The

celebration is held each year nationwide to celebrate after school programs. For more details call

The 21C preschool program held an “All About Me” tour presenting Sgt. Gary

Gregory, Officer Harris and Chief Deputy Ronnie Kennedy of the Ashdown Sheriffs Department.

Once each month the program presents an “Adventure Tour” for all the preschoolers in the

Ashdown community directed by Kim Befeld the 21st Century Preschool Facilitator. Pictured

are: Shanta Allen (preschool teacher), Sgt. Gregory, and Officer Harris stand with a group of

preschools from Mary's Little Lamb Daycare.

Abby Rayfield, (Quincey –LFH) the outgoing president and current Miss FBLA of Mid-Level

District IV Future Business Leaders of America inducted two Ashdown Junior High students,

Daphane Dean as vice president and Dara Gaines as reporter at a conference at Henderson

State University.

EAST students hosted a regional meeting at the high school recently. Over 30 students

attended to discuss ideas and hear Paul Gideon, Pond Creek Wildlife Refuge Manager, and Ron

Hardy, Director of Program Enhancement and Community Relations for the EAST Initiative.

Margaret Daniel Primary is having Night Library on Mondays from 5-7 p.m.

A drug education program will be conducted by Becky Reynolds and the Little River

Co. Sheriff's Dept. officer, Sgt Gary Gregory. Sgt. Gregory will cover what meth is and

how to recognize it. The session will be on Oct.25. 7:00 at CCUA.

October Board Minutes

The Board of Education of the Ashdown Public Schools held its regular monthly meeting

on Monday, October 15, 2007 at Margaret Daniel Primary School. Board President

Raymond Latson called the meeting to order at 6:20 p.m. Ricky Ward called the roll.

Raymond Latson, Imogene Mize, Rosa bowman and Ricky Ward were present. Chuck

Davis, Dorothy Henderson and Milton Higginbotham were absent.

The meeting began with prayer by Ricky Ward. Margaret Daniel Primary student,

Leilana Warren led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ricky Ward made a motion to suspend the agenda. Rosa Bowman seconded. Motion

carried. Ricky Ward made a motion to table the reorganization of the board until the next

regular meeting. Imogene Mize seconded. Motion carried.

Reports to the Board

• Mr. Walker presented a review of expenditures. Ricky Ward made a motion

to approve. Rosa Bowman seconded. Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker presented the financial report.

• Mr. Walker reported that the current enrollment is 1595.

• Mr. Walker gave a report on District Services Department.

Old Business

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation to approve the minutes of the September

25, 2007 meeting with a spelling correction. Ricky Ward made a motion to

accept the recommendation. Rosa Bowman seconded. Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker gave a report on the construction progress.

New Business

• Mr. Walker reviewed the school calendar.

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation to move the November Board Meeting to

the 12th. Ricky Ward made a motion to accept. Rosa Bowman seconded.

Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker stated the Regional ASBA Training will held in Nashville on

Thursday, October 18th and the van has been reserved.

• Mr. Walker presented a request by Shannon Risinger for permission to travel

to Puerto Rico this summer with the Foreign Language Club and made a

recommendation to approve the trip. Ricky Ward made motion to accept.

Imogene Mize seconded. Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation to approve the application for the Special

Education Disability Act. Ricky Ward made a motion to accept. Rosa

Bowman seconded. Motion carried.

Annual Reports to the Public

Administrators Judy Dowdy, Linda Walker, John Crowder, Kay York, Keith Fricks, and

Mike Walker presented their Annual Reports to the Public. Judy Dowdy also presented

for James Jones.

Ricky Ward made a motion at 8:00 p.m. to go into executive session after a five minute break. Imogene

Mize seconded. Motion carried. Raymond Latson called the meeting back to order at 8:40 p.m.

Personnel

• Imogene Mize made a motion to return to open session. Rosa Bowman

seconded. Motion carried.

• No action was taken during executive session.

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation to approve Family Medical Leave for

Mandy Pounds for six weeks beginning October 22nd. Ricky Ward made a

motion to accept. Rosa Bowman seconded. Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation for a stipend for $4,730.00 for Kim

Befeld to be paid out of the 21st Century Pre School Grant for the 2007 –

2008 school year. Ricky Ward made a motion to accept. Imogene Mize

seconded. Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation to accept the resignation of Helen Eason

effective September 26, 2007. Ricky Ward made a motion to accept. Rosa

Bowman seconded. Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation to accept the resignation of Debbie

Thomson effective March 15, 2008. Rosa Bowman made a motion to accept.

Ricky Ward seconded. Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation to transfer Geneva Rhodes from the

High School Cafeteria to C. D. Franks Cafeteria for the remainder of the

school year. Ricky Ward made a motion to accept. Imogene Mize seconded.

Motion carried.

• Mr. Walker made a recommendation to approve a $300.00 Christmas Bonus

to be paid in November. Imogene Mize made a motion to accept. Rosa

Bowman seconded. Motion carried.

• Imogene Mize made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:45 p.m. Rosa

Bowman seconded. Motion carried.
