Dr. Charlotte Green, Executive Director of the Arkansas Imagination Library was the guest speaker of Tyler Davis at the Ashdown Rotary Club on Wednesday, April 4. She spoke on what is happening on the state level to expand the Imagination Library to all 75 counties in Arkansas. A statistic she shared was that 70% of all incarcerated adults cannot read on a 4th grade level. This statistic could be reversed by only $25 per child per year to mail out one book a month.
Ashdown Coordinator for Imagination Library, Tyler Davis said, “we are excited to see this program come to Little River County and in the first quarter we have approximately 200 kids enrolled. By placing books in the children’s life of birth to age 5, the partnership with the Library is estimated to save our school districts 10-20 times the current amount being spent to remediate.”
The greatest return on investment in human capital happens prior to a child’s first birthday and begins to diminish from that point forward so it is very important to start this type of program at an early age to help them develop the pre-reading and reading skills so they are more likely to graduate workforce ready, college bound, without remediation, and on the path to becoming fully productive members of society.
The goal of the Arkansas Imagination Library is to, “ensure that every child in Arkansas, birth to age five, has the opportunity to receive a personal set of books delivered monthly to his/her home mailbox prior to entering school.”
Superintendent, Jason Sanders is “very excited for Ashdown Schools to be a lead sponsor of the program along with Domtar and has given 100% support to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library."
Registered children in Little River County between birth and age 5, will receive an age appropriate book each month. The annual cost per child per year is $25, but due to sponsors, families will receive the books for free. Sponsors that would like to participate can contact Tyler Davis at 870-898-3899. The Ashdown Community Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit, so any donations made are tax deductible.
